Mornings are rough.
Especially when you are a busy girl. A few extra winks sound way more glorious than getting out of bed. Then, once you get out of bed, you have to rush around to get out the door on time.
From that point on, the rest of the day feels….frazzled. I hate to admit that I started way too many mornings like this.
In an effort to start my days off on a better foot, I decided that I had to audit all of my morning routines and change them to be super effective AND save me as much time as possible.
You may have rough mornings too and need some help making over your morning routine. So, let’s start with the hardest thing first.
GTFO YOUR PHONE
How much time do you spend on your phone when you first wake up? Do you make the worst sin of checking emails when you first wake up? Or surfing Instagram? You have to put a stop to that TODAY.
I know it’s an appealing way to put off getting out of your warm bed, but your mind is sensitive when you first wake up. Those first few minutes set the tone for the entire day. Email or social media set a BAD tone.
To break this hard habit, you should implement the next tactic.
GET A REAL ALARM CLOCK
To break the cycle of grabbing your cell phone when you first wake up, stop using your phone as your alarm clock.
When you get a real alarm clock, you can set it up FAR away from your bed. The added bonus of this tactic is that you have to get out of bed to shut it off. This makes it easier to wake up on time and not waste time in bed.
UPGRADE YOUR COFFEE
After you have accomplished getting out of bed (go you!), what is the next thing you want to get your booty into gear? Probably a yummy cup of coffee. But the normal routine of hitting the beloved ‘green cup shop’ poses a few problems to your new morning routine.
First, stopping at the coffee shop always takes longer than planned. I’m not joking when I say that every time I decide to stop at the coffee shop, I end up at work at least 10-15 minutes late.
Secondly, unless you get your coffee plain, most drinks have SO much sugar in them. The buzz you get is more from the sugar than the caffeine. When the Unicorn drink came out, it had over 50 grams of sugar in it!
And lastly, a coffee shop routine is very expensive. Most drinks cost around $5 each. If you go each day of the work week, this habit will cost you $100 a month.
When I decided that I needed to makeover my coffee routine, I decided to try Mushroom Coffee. I first heard about it on Tim Ferris’ podcast. Love him and everything he recommends.
I also had a client at the salon suggest it. Before I decided to make the switch, I researched FOUR SIGMATIC coffee to see what all the hype was about.
Here are the benefits I found out about:
NO MYCOTOXINS: most coffee beans contain molds. Mycotoxins from mold wreak havoc on your brain. This brand of beans is always tested to make sure no yucky mold byproducts are present.
NO JITTERS: this type of coffee contains about half the milligrams of caffeine that a normal cup of coffee has. This is great if you have anxiety, because it won’t give you anxious jitters after you drink it. But don’t worry about not getting the brain karate chop that you want. The mushroom elixirs added in help with neuroplasticity. AKA brain food for your neurons. So, the mental clarity you experience is because your brain is getting a natural boost from antioxidants.
YOU CONTROL THE AMOUNT OF SUGAR AND INGREDIENTS: Because you are making your drink at home, you know what is in it. You can control the amount of sugar, as well as any other beneficial ingredients you want to add.
MOST IMPORTANT: you will save money AND time. A box of 12 packets instant coffee cost $12. This means that one cup of coffee costs $1.20! In a month, that saves you over $70 per month compared to the coffee shop routine. Plus, cutting out the coffee stop from your morning routine saves you precious time that you can put towards meditating, getting your lunch meal prepped, or even getting some extra winks of sleep.
Needless to say, I have been loving the switch to Mushroom Coffee. I have also perfected my favorite recipe for coffee. It not only tastes great, but it provides so many health benefits that start my mornings on a great path.
Plus, everything I add to my coffee is for a specific purpose. Bulletproof Brain Octane for healthy fats to give me brain power without a sugar crash. Cinnamon for hormonal health. Collagen peptides for protein and to help keep my skin glowing.
This coffee hack has been a total game changer. I’m all about the minor tweaks in my life that produce major results. This is one of those tweaks.
That, along with the other morning changes has made waking up early much more bearable. By starting my morning with intentional choices that help both my mind and body, it sets the tone for smart choices all day.
Do you have any good morning hacks or upgrades that you love? I am always looking for ways to improve my routine. Especially with a new year, I like to analyze everything I do and find where I can make some minor tweaks.
Always testing and I love it.
